Residents often reflect on the days when common sense was deemed more important than regulations. Sometimes regulations can prevent one danger, but create a different one. For example, clearly we must have fire doors, but they are heavy so an older person risks falling trying to open a heavy door. If we have a fire alarm, residents have to evacuate even in the dark, but holding a torch and steering a wheelie isn’t easy. Our 102–year–old resident came up with the perfect solution: beanie hats with lights on! Looks a bit daft, but they’re warm and residents can see where they’re going with hands free for wheelies. Hopefully we never have to use them, but it was good fun to capture a photo opportunity for PeriNews!
